Automotive Programs
Are you good with your hands as well as enjoy working on cars? Maybe you should consider the automotive service industry. This field is growing due to the increasing amount of vehicles traveling the roads. First, it is a good idea to get prepared for some of the things you might have to consider if you do decide to become a mechanic.
ASE Certification
The ASE certificate proves to employers and customers that a mechanic is knowledgeable and well-trained in the field. It is part exam, part experience. The exam tests your knowledge and will cost 30 or more dollars. To fill the experience requirement, you may have to work for at least two years in the automotive service industry. However, for those who were enrolled in a training program, they will consider it one year of your required experience.
Employment Outlook
The career outlook for automotive service technicians is good. The amount of jobs is slowly increasing, and those with training from a vocational school may have better opportunities available. Mechanics can work in repair shops, car dealerships, and franchised tire service centers. Mechanics are usually paid anywhere between 13 and 20 dollars an hour, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Where to Get Training
It is suggested that you attend school for training. Training will ensure that you are better paid and employed. The type of training varies in length, ranging from six months to a year or more for an Associate’s degree. Training programs, certificates, and Associate’s degrees are all available at community colleges and trade schools.
Take the TABE
The TABE, the Test for Adult Basic Education, is required for those attempting to go into vocational programs. Therefore, if you have made the decision to receive the benefit of a good training program, you may have to take this test. It can take up to an hour or more, and will test your basic understanding of English, math, and reading comprehension. You should prepare for the test; if you do poorly, you may not be accepted into certain programs.
Become a Heavy Equipment Mechanic
An excellent sub-field of automotive service is heavy equipment mechanics. Training programs in this field may be available at community colleges. Due to its specialized nature, it may have better, well-paid opportunities. Students in the program will be taught everything they need to operate on large vehicles, especially buses and tractor trailers.
Enter a Program in Auto Service Technology
Many schools and colleges have programs in automotive service technology. These programs will prepare students to go straight to work in the field as mechanics. Students will receive class instruction combined with actual hands-on training. Those planning on taking the ASE certification exam will be prepared for it after this program. Coursework will include shop organization and proper use of tools and equipment, and the program will take about a year to complete.
